If you are looking to add a pet to your family, here are a few things to help you understand Sunny Meadows policies:
-Animal Availability-
We have well over 100 dogs and cats available for adoption. At times, 1 animal may receive multiple applications on them to adopt. Applications are not accepted on a first come, first served basis. Our mission is to place the adoptable pet in the best home. If an animal is adopted that you also were interested in adopting, please don't be upset or angry. A rescued animal being adopted is a wonderful outcome; so many shelter animals never have the freedom.
-Learning About the Animals-
Most of what is known about each animal can be found online, or by asking the staff. The information known about the pet, at times, may be scattered or little known. Animals in our care will at minimum include whether the animal was surrendered by owner, found as a stray, seized from the owner, or rescued from a puppy mill, or back yard breeder. We also adopt from high kill shelters. Each of our rescues have their own story. We take in rescues from multiple circumstances and try to help as many as possible. We do our best to learn as much about the pet as possible. If certain criteria needs to be known for adoption to your family, we will do our best to determine the answer. We are however not always able to learn specifics about the animals because we are in a shelter environment and not a home.
The animal's sex, age, breed, weight and spay/neuter status are also known. Unless the animal was an owner-surrender; age and breed are sometimes unknown and can only be estimated by the staff.
-Viewing the Animals-
When visiting Sunny Meadows and our animals that are available for adoption, we have criteria that must be honored. We are no longer able to walk the general public through the dog holding areas. For years we allowed the public to witness first hand the enormous effort of our rescue. Often times people viewed pets as a petting zoo and not serious inquiries to adopt.
-Meet and Greet-
If you are seeking to adopt a dog and currently have one or more pets at home, we ask that you make arrangements to bring your resident dog (or dogs) for an introduction to the dog you would like to adopt. A trained staff member will oversee the introduction to ensure the new dog will be accepted into your home. If you have cats and would like to adopt a dog, we can have that dog interact with one of our dog-friendly shelter cats to see if the dog is likely to accept having a feline sibling.
-Health of Shelter Animals-
A shelter environment can be very stressful for some animals; additionally, some of the animals may not have received quality care before coming to the shelter. Sunny Meadows is very fortunate to have a veterinary technician on staff, as well as the service of multiple Veterinarians. Knowing that, you can be sure that medical issues are treated promptly.
